* WHAT NEBILET IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR?
& & – Nebilet contains nebivolol, a cardiovascular drug belonging to the group of selective beta-blocking agents
& & (i.e. with a selective action on the cardiovascular system). It prevents increased heart rate, controls heart
& & pumping strength. It also exerts a dilating action on blood vessels, which contributes as well to lower
& & blood pressure.
& & – It is used to treat an increased blood pressure (hypertension). Nebilet is also used to treat chronic heart failure
& & in patients aged 70 or over.
* Do not take Nebilet:
& & – if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to nebivolol or any of the other ingredients of Nebilet.
& & – if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
& & – if you have one or more of the following disorders:
& & . liver function disorder;
& & . low blood pressure, poor circulation in the arms or legs, very slow heartbeat (less than 60 beats per minute)
& & or certain other heart problems;
& & . your heart failure has just occured or worsened recently, or you are receiving treatment into a vein (by I.V.
& & “drip”) to help your heart work;
& & . asthma or wheezing (now or in the past);
& & . certain tumors in the adrenal glands;
& & . a metabolic disorder (metabolic acidosis) characterized by too much acid in your body (and blood).
* Special Precautions:
& & – Nebilet should not be used during pregnancy.
& & – You should not use Nebilet while breast-feeding.
& & – Elderly and Nebilet: When you are above 65 years of age, your doctor will in principle start treatment with
& & 1/2 tabet if you are taking Nebilet for increased blood pressure.
& & – Children and adolescents: Because nothing is known about its effect on children and adolescents, Nebilet
& & should not be given to them.
& & – Kidney problems and Nebilet: Tell your doctor if you have a renal disorder. In principle, your doctor will start
& & your treatment with 1/2 tablet daily if you are taking Nebilet for increased blood pressure. Afterwards, your
& & doctor may decide to prescribe a higher dose.
* Other Precautions:
& & In certain situations, Nebilet should be used with greater caution. Inform your doctor if you have or develop
& & one of the following problems:
& & – abnormally slow heartbeat or other heart problems;
& & – poor circulation in the arms or legs,
& & – prolonged breathing problems;
& & – diabetes: Nebilet has no effect on blood sugar, but it could mask the signs of a low sugar level (nervousness,
& & trembling, faster heartbeat). Sweating as a sign, however, does not disappear;
& & – increased production of thyroid hormone (thyreotoxicosis): abrupt withdrawal of Nebilet may increase your
& & heart beat;
& & – allergy: Nebilet may intensify your reaction to pollen or other substances you are allergic to;
& & – psoriasis.
* Driving or operating machinery:
& & From time to time, dizziness or tiredness may occur as a side-effect. It is wise to take into account while driving
& & or operating machinery.
* How much should you take?
& & – Your doctor or pharmacist has told you how much Nebilet you should take. Always take the prescribed amount,
& & which generally is 1/4 to 2 tablets per day. Elderly and patients with a renal disorder start in principle with 1/2
& & tablet daily for the treatment of increased blood pressure or 1/4 tablet daily for chronic heart failure.
& & – In hypertension usually it takes up to 3 weeks before the effect of Nebilet is maximal. In chronic heart failure
& & the initial uptitration should be done according to the following steps at 1-2 weekly intervals based on patient
& & tolerability:
& & 1.25 mg nebivolol, to be increased to 2.5 mg nebivolol once daily, then to 5 mg once daily and then to 10 mg
& & once daily.
& & – The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg nebivolol once daily.
